Jim Gates New AMS Fellow

Sylvester James Gates Jr. is now the first black Fellow of both the American Mathematical Society AND the American Physical Society! The fellowship of the American Mathematical Society program recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication, and utilization of mathematics.
There are several goals of the fellowship, which include creating a class of peer-distinguished mathematicians recognized for their contributions to the profession, honoring excellence, lifting the morale of the profession, and supporitng the advancement of more mathematicians in leadership positions in their institutions and broader society.
